I’m fascinated by the jobs board space because on the surface, it seems like a pretty simple business to create from a software and development point of view. Even if you don’t have development skills yourself, there are a number of off-the-shelf solutions like WordPress plugins and pre-built templates.

That said, there’s one thing that’s pretty unique to job boards you have to keep in mind: There’s two types of people you need to market to.

You need to market to the business owners so that you’ll actually have jobs to offer people, and you need to market to the people who are going to be interested in jobs (so business owners keep posting them).

Search traffic can help a lot here, but it’s far from a perfect solution.

MoAIJobs: $2.3K in Monthly Revenue

vacancies within Artificial Intelligence

Companies are charged $199 to list a vacancy on the site, with the option to pay extra for pinning the job role, adding a brand colour or including a logo within the listing.

Job seekers can then filter vacancies by category, location, or job roles such as engineering, design, or product management, to find and apply for relevant opportunities.

MoAIJobs, despite being a young business, has now grown monthly revenue beyond $2,300. It’s also worth noting that due to minimal expenses, the business operates at a 99% profit margin.

JobCannon: $500K in Funding

AI-powered job platform for developers and engineers

JobCannon provides a way to streamline talent acquisition and the process of searching for jobs, using artificial intelligence, which was founded in 2022.

The platform offers an efficient way of identifying candidates for specific job roles in engineering and development.

Companies can list a vacancy with the specific skills they’re looking for, then receive tailored CVs of matched candidates with the help of AI. Using the platform, suitable candidates can then be booked in for interviews.

Each of these candidates complete a personal assessment on JobCannon to showcase their skills on a unique profile. The platform's algorithm then matches users with suitable vacancies which can then be applied for.

At present, there are over 750 vacancies featured on the site, and the platform has been used by more than 60,000 job-seekers to date.

JobCannon - which now has a team of more than 30 people - raised $500,000 in pre-seed funding in January 2024, as it looked to continue its growth trajectory and grow to $100 million in annual revenue over the next five years. The business has since acquired Ukrainian marketing company, Adsme.

No Fluff Jobs has seen steadily increasing annual revenue over the last few years, rising from €1.29 million (~$1.4M) in 2019 to €6.3 million (~$7M) in 2022. This increase in income has been aligned with the business operating profitably since 2020.

#9

WeAreDevelopers: $8M in Annual Revenue

Job listings, community training and events platform for developers

WeAreDevelopers is a job and event platform for developers which was founded in 2015 by Sead Ahmetovic, Benjamin Ruschin, Thomas Pamminger and Markus Wagner.

Those looking for job roles within Europe can join for free to view more than 5,000 pre-vetted vacancies including roles such as consultants, developers, engineers and product managers. The job search results can be filtered to match an applicant's skills, job type, location or a role within a particular company.

The business also provides a wide range of virtual events and development sessions which individuals can use to improve their skills, as well as access to over 2,500 hours of developer tech talks.

Once a year the brand brings 15,000 developers together at their World Congress community event which cost between €129 (~$140) to €999 (~$1,090) to attend the three-day function in 2024.

Whilst the service is free for developers, companies pay to list job openings which costs from €810 (~$883) to €1,980 (~$2,160) plus VAT; these vacancy listings then reach over 120,000 developers on the platform.

In recent years WeAreDevelopers has seen strong growth, in part thanks to €4.2 million (~$4.6M) in funding. In 2019 the business posted annual revenue of €1.6 ($1.8M), which has increased to €7.3 million (~$8M) for 2022.

#10

OnlineJobs.ph: $1M in Monthly Revenue

Service to find and hire Filipino workers

OnlineJobs.ph is a service which helps companies hire employees from the Philippines that was founded in 2009 by John Jonas.

Rather than just showcasing virtual assistants, the platform features over three million profiles of workers who are skilled in various roles including SEO, PPC, content writing, graphic design, WordPress development, eCommerce and many more.

There is no cost for job-seekers on the site, and they're able to apply for roles from over half a million employers using the service.

For companies looking to hire, there is a free option which allows three job postings per month, with the ability to view those applicants. However, if they wish to communicate with, interview and hire those workers, there is a monthly fee of $69-99 or $299-349 annually. Training and onboarding support is also included in this price.

Unlike other platforms - and as the staff are employed directly by individual companies rather than through OnlineJobs.ph - after completing a hire, businesses can end their subscription so there's no need to pay a monthly fee if not required.

Recent results for OnlineJobs have seen double-digit growth each year. This has now culminated in $1 million in monthly revenue for the business. This is an incredible result for a company that was started with just $5,000. And, as they aim to add another 100,000 customers in 2024, there's nothing to suggest this upward trajectory won't continue.

Just Join IT: $15.6M in Annual Revenue

Largest European Tech Industry Job Board

Just Join IT is a job platform for the tech industry which was founded in 2017 by Piotr Nowosielski and Tomasz Gański.

The bootstrapped business currently features more than 12,600 job postings and is visited by over half a million European IT employees each month.

They aim to simplify the job searching process by enabling users to look for job roles in a variety of different ways. These include by location, business types like startups or agencies, or specific job roles such as working with PHP, Python and Ruby.

Employers can pay to post job listings on the platform from €270 (~$290) for 30 days. There are also additional pricing tiers ranging up to €770 (~$826) which include ‘bump-ups’ for the vacancy as well as increasing degrees of exposure to reach more prospective applicants.

Just Join IT has witnessed significant growth since launching, which saw annual revenue hit €754,000 (~$809K) in 2019. Since then the platform has seen a huge upward trend in revenue, generating €14.5 million (~$15.6M) in 2022.

#12

Zen Educate: $22M in Annual Revenue

Education recruitment platform

Zen Educate is a platform to connect schools with supply teaching staff which was founded in 2017 by Oren Cohen and Slava Kremerman.

After discovering that UK schools spend over £600 million per year directly to temporary staffing agencies, they wanted to create a solution which would save schools millions of pounds in recruitment costs.

Zen Educate was born, operating as an alternative to temporary cover agencies for teachers, assistants and supervisors looking to find work within schools.

The service allows schools to view the relevant profiles of staff that have been both interviewed and vetted before being added to the platform. They can then be booked for a specific vacancy within a matter of minutes, and with up to 50% lower costs than through a typical agency.

Zen Educate recently raised $37 million in funding - taking the total amount of investment in the business beyond $71 million - as they look to double their US offering by hiring over 1,000 educators to address a national teacher shortage.

In 2022 Zen Educate generated more than €20.6 million (~$22.3M) in annual revenue, a huge increase on the €2.9 million (~$3.2M) reached three years prior. With the recent investment and focused expansion within the US, we wouldn't be surprised to see this figure continue to rise.

#13

ZipRecruiter: $645M in Annual Revenue

Jobs search engine

ZipRecruiter is a job search engine which was founded in 2010 by Ian Siege (current CEO), Joe Edmonds, Ward Poulos, and Will Redd.

The business - with offices in Israel, the UK and the USA - allows those looking for roles to receive available opportunities directly into their inbox courtesy of job matching technology. To date more than 430 million candidate applications have been submitted with the service.

Businesses are able to post job vacancies on the site, which are then sent to more than 100 job boards and reach over four million potential applicants. ZipRecruiter also scans thousands of resumes to filter individuals with the required experience and skill level for the role.

Companies can then use the “invite to apply” feature to notify potential applicants of the opportunity. Finally, the built in dashboard enables employers to sort, review and rate those interested in the position.

More than 1.5 million businesses have used the platform, with 10,000 new companies joining each month. They can test the service for free before choosing whether to subscribe to one of the three paid monthly plans ranging from $299 - $719.

ZipRecruiter - which has received $769 million in funding to date - reported annual revenue of $645.7 million in 2023. Whilst this was down 28% from the $904.6 million generated the previous year, there has been a clear focus on profitability within the business.
